Traveller's diarrhoea is the most common illness affecting international travellers. It is caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with bacteria, viruses or parasites — most commonly enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). It affects up to 50% of travellers to high risk destinations.
Symptoms include sudden onset of loose or watery stools, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever. Most cases resolve within 3 to 5 days without treatment, however severe or prolonged diarrhoea can lead to dehydration and can significantly disrupt travel plans. Having standby antibiotic treatment allows you to treat the illness promptly and get back to enjoying your trip.
Do I need this medication?
Standby antibiotic treatment is recommended for travellers visiting high risk destinations, particularly those where prompt medical care may not be readily available. It is prescribed as a treatment to take with you and use only if needed.
High risk destinations
South Asia, Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Central and South America, Middle East and North Africa
High risk travellers
Backpackers, those eating street food, travellers in remote areas, those with important events during their trip
Prevention tips
Boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it. Avoid tap water, ice, raw vegetables and undercooked food.
