Book AppointmentExpert ear care in Bristol
Ear wax build up is one of the most common causes of hearing loss, tinnitus and ear discomfort. At Cotham Pharmacy our trained clinicians provide safe and effective ear wax removal using the latest techniques — restoring your hearing quickly and comfortably.
Every appointment begins with an initial consultation and examination using an otoscope to assess what is happening in the ear. This allows us to determine the most appropriate treatment — whether that is ear wax removal by microsuction or irrigation, or whether there is an underlying issue such as an infection that requires further attention.
Do you have blocked ears?
Ear wax build up can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms. If you are experiencing any of the following our ear clinic can help.
Reduced hearing
Muffled or reduced hearing in one or both ears is one of the most common signs of ear wax build up
Tinnitus
Ringing, buzzing or humming sounds in the ear that are not caused by an external source
Earache or discomfort
A feeling of fullness, pressure or discomfort in the ear canal
Dizziness
A blocked ear can occasionally cause balance problems and a feeling of dizziness
How we treat ear wax
Following your initial otoscope examination we will recommend the most appropriate removal method based on the type and amount of wax present and your individual circumstances. We offer two methods of ear wax removal.
Initial consultation
Every appointment starts with an otoscope examination to assess the ear canal and determine the cause — ear wax, infection or another condition — before any treatment is carried out.
Microsuction
The gold standard method. Gentle suction removes ear wax safely and precisely under direct visualisation. No water, no mess, suitable for most patients.
Irrigation
A controlled flow of warm water is used to gently flush ear wax from the canal. Suitable for softer wax and patients who are not suitable for microsuction.
Immediate results
Most patients notice an immediate improvement in hearing following treatment. The whole appointment takes 15–30 minutes.
Before your appointment
To soften the ear wax and make removal easier and more comfortable we recommend using olive oil ear drops for at least 7 days before your appointment. This significantly improves the outcome of treatment.
Olive oil drops
Apply 2–3 drops of olive oil to each affected ear twice daily for at least 7 days before your appointment.
Do not use cotton buds
Cotton buds push wax deeper into the ear canal and can make the problem worse. Avoid using them entirely.
When not to come
Do not attend if you have a perforated eardrum, active ear infection or have had recent ear surgery. Contact us to discuss.
