Pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can cause a range of serious illnesses including pneumonia, meningitis, septicaemia and sinusitis. It is one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable illness and death worldwide.
Pneumonia caused by pneumococcal bacteria can be severe, particularly in older adults, young children and those with underlying health conditions. The pneumococcal vaccine significantly reduces the risk of these serious infections and their complications.
Do I need this vaccine?
The pneumococcal vaccine is available privately from age 2 and above. It is particularly recommended for older adults, those with certain medical conditions that increase the risk of serious pneumococcal infection, and anyone seeking additional protection.
Ages 2 and above
Available privately from age 2 and above. Particularly important for those who missed childhood vaccination or need additional protection.
At risk individuals
Those with diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, liver disease or a weakened immune system
Older adults
Adults aged 65 and over are at significantly higher risk of serious pneumococcal disease and its complications
How many doses do I need?
For most adults a single dose of the pneumococcal vaccine provides long term protection. Some individuals with certain medical conditions may require additional doses. Our pharmacist will advise at your free consultation.
