Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It can cause meningitis — inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord — and septicaemia, a life threatening blood poisoning. The disease can progress rapidly and can be fatal within 24 hours.
The Meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against four of the main disease-causing strains — A, C, W and Y. It is a different vaccine to the Meningitis B vaccine and protects against different strains. Both are available at Cotham Pharmacy.
Do I need this vaccine?
Meningitis ACWY vaccination is mandatory for pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah. It is also strongly recommended for travellers to the meningitis belt of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly during the dry season from December to June.

How many doses do I need?
A single dose of the Meningitis ACWY vaccine provides protection for most travellers. For Hajj and Umrah, the vaccine must be given within 3 years and at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia.
Single dose
One injection. Protection from approximately 2 weeks after vaccination.
Timing
Ideally given at least 2 weeks before travel. For Hajj and Umrah must be given at least 10 days before arrival.
Booster
Booster recommended every 5 years for those at continued risk or travelling to high risk areas regularly.
