What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is spread through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids — including unprotected sex, sharing needles or other drug equipment, needlestick injuries and from mother to baby during birth.

Many people infected with Hepatitis B have no symptoms initially, however the virus can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer. In the UK, Hepatitis B is a significant occupational health risk for healthcare workers and others who may be exposed to blood or bodily fluids in their work.

Do I need this vaccine?

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for healthcare workers, those in occupations with potential exposure to blood or bodily fluids, individuals who were not vaccinated in childhood and those at increased personal risk.

Healthcare workers

Occupational risk

Those working in social care, emergency services, tattoo and piercing, dentistry and other roles involving potential blood exposure

Personal protection

Those who were not vaccinated in childhood, those with multiple sexual partners or those seeking personal protection against Hepatitis B
