What is dengue fever?

Dengue fever is a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes, common across tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Most people recover fully, but the illness can be severe. High fever, intense headaches, muscle and joint pain and a distinctive rash are the hallmarks of the condition. In a small number of cases it can progress to severe dengue, which requires urgent medical attention.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. Vaccination combined with sensible mosquito bite precautions gives the best protection for those travelling to or living in affected areas.

Who is this vaccine for?

The vaccine used at Cotham Pharmacy is Qdenga, licensed for individuals aged 4 and above. It is given in accordance with JCVI recommendations and Green Book guidance for dengue fever. Our team will review your eligibility at your consultation before any vaccination takes place.

How many doses do I need?

Qdenga is given as two doses, each 0.5ml, following a 0 and 3 month schedule. That means your second dose comes three months after the first. Studies indicate protection can last up to 4.5 years after completing the course. Whether a booster will eventually be needed has not yet been established.
