What is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox (Varicella) is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus. It is spread through direct contact with the rash or through respiratory droplets from an infected person. Most people contract chickenpox in childhood, but those who have not had the infection remain at risk throughout their life.

While chickenpox is usually mild in children, it can cause serious complications in adults, pregnant women, newborns and immunocompromised individuals. Complications can include bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, encephalitis and, in rare cases, death. The virus also remains dormant in the nervous system and can reactivate later in life as shingles.

Do I need this vaccine?

The chickenpox vaccine is recommended for anyone who has never had chickenpox and has not previously been vaccinated. It is particularly important for healthcare workers, those in contact with vulnerable individuals and non-immune adults and adolescents.

How many doses do I need?

The chickenpox vaccine is given as a course of 2 doses. The two doses should be given at least 4 to 8 weeks apart. Both doses are required for full protection.
